house cleansing and blessing Sunday c lass May 2011

House Blessings:
In our daily lives we all have good days and bad days. Spaces where people are present, whether it is living, working or even just visiting, will collect all sorts of energies, some positive, some negative. In fact every person who visits a space, if even for a brief period, will leave energies behind that will linger. Doing a regular cleansing and purification, preferably every month, will clear these energies that accumulate and make for a much more peaceful and balanced abode.
This ritual should also be performed whenever there is any major event, such as a death, an intense argument, or even if one is moving to a new dwelling so that all the negative energies can be cleared.
Make sure that all windows and doors are opened. Take a sage bundle and holding it over a fire proof vessel, light it. Walk clockwise around to each room in the entire home. Each room you come to walk clockwise around the room, while waving the sage bundle in a clockwise circular manner. Fill the rooms with sage smoke. Once the entire home has been smudged, taking extra care to get all closets and cabinets. Some people like to use a bell to get the spirits attention while doing this process.

Then wave the protection sage want clockwise around the room and over each opening while saying:
With Fire and Air,
I consecrate and protect this space.
Next, sprinkle a mixture of protection incense such as dragons blood, sandalwood, frankincense, myrrh, and sea salt around the entire inside of the perimeter of house against the walls, inside the closets, and especially across your doorways. Next, use holy blessed water sprinkle the holy water on your finger and put a cross or a pentagram on each window and doorway. If you do not have holy water, use salt water with spring water and sea salt. Do this in every room and at every window and door, as well as every other possible opening to the house such as outlets or phone jacks, draw a cross or an invoking pentagram using your finger dipped in the salt water. Draw the pentagram at every possible opening while saying:
With Water and Earth,
I consecrate and protect this space.
Repeat until the entire house has been consecrated in this manner. Repeat monthly, preferably at the full moon, or as needed.

Banishing Negativity
A Ritual for the Dark Moon
Begin by setting up your altar as you normally do for ritual, making sure you have a black candle and wine or water in your chalice in addition to anything else you use. You will also need a cleansing, purifying incense and a censer or some kind of container which can be carried around your home. It is best to set your altar on the floor for this rite, but you may do it however you feel most comfortable. Cast your circle as you normally do. When you are through, kneel before your altar and light the black candle. With your arms held, palms upward, at your sides, call Hecate by saying three times:
o Hecate, beautiful Crone of Night
o I call you here to put things right.
o Transform the negative thought and pain
o And help my life be whole again.
Close your eyes. When you feel the presence of Hecate and know she is there to help you, open your eyes. Bow your head to her to show your reverence, and then take the chalice, saying:
o Lady of the Dark Moon, Share with me this wine.
o Bring your protection to Flood this life of mine.
o May the waters of your eternal womb Bring change most divine.
Sip a small amount of the wine (or water), envisioning it as liquid energy, flowing to effect a positive change within and outside of you. Leave the rest as an offering to Hecate.
Light the purifying incense in the censer, cut a door in the Circle, and, beginning in the eastern-most corner of your home, smudge your home, going clockwise. Go into every closet, the bathroom, and the garage - make sure your entire house is smudged. As you go, chant:
o Negativity be gone.
Come back into the Circle and visualize your entire house and yard bathed in a peaceful blue light. Since you have created a void by banishing the negativity, you will need to fill that void. Ask that good, protective spirits come into your home and that positive energies replace the negative ones that have just been banished. This is an important step, because if you don't fill the void with something good, the negativity will come right back.
Thank Hecate.
Meditate if you wish, visualizing your life free from negative happenings and feelings and full of love, prosperity, and happiness. Feel how She has changed your home and your life.
Close the Circle and know that it is done.

ridding gossip spell

Averting Harmful Gossip
Each year in February the Romans celebrated the Day of Tacita (February 20), the silent Goddess who averted harmful gossip. Since malicious, negative gossip can destroy careers, marriages, and lives, one should consider petitioning Tacita for protection from such harm and ask her to help you avoid causing such harm to others.
You will need:
• three candles (a black, a magenta, and a green) and holders for your altar.
• a knife or pin
• success incense, or wisteria or heliotrope.
• patchouli, mint, and rose oils.
If you are dealing with a specific gossiping person, carve his or her name in the black candle with a knife. If you don't know a name, carve "all gossip." Anoint the black candle from the end to the wick with patchouli oil. While anointing it, concentrate on the removal of all damaging gossip from your life. Don't specify how this is to be done, but place your trust in the Goddess and God for the correct solution. Place the black candle in the holder in the centre of your altar.
Anoint the magenta and green candles from the wick to the end with mint and/or rose oil. If you like, you could use rose on the magenta candle and mint on the green one. While anointing them, concentrate on positive energies coming into your life. Place these candles on your altar, the magenta to the left of the black candle, the green to the right.
Spend a few moments breathing in white light and expelling darkness with each breath. Hold the palms of your hands toward the candles and chant:
o Gossip does not harm or bind me.
o Evil words come not near me.
o I am light. I am truth. I am love.
Repeat these words nine times. Feel their positive meaning sink into your subconscious mind. Know that you are building a shield of protection around you, a shield built out of positive energy so strong that negatives can't get through.
Leave the candles in a safe place to burn out. Dispose of the wax.

freezer spell to get rid of someone or something

Freezer Spell to get someone to leave you alone
You will need to have ready:
• An empty cup
• A Ziploc bag
• A Red Candle
• A small piece of paper
• A pen
• Two cups of water
Open the Ziploc bag and place it inside the empty cup, so that it stays open.
Light the candle. Greet the deities and state the nature of your problem.
Write the name of the person you have the problem with in the center of the paper. Write (in a spiral fashion, beginning on the outside edge of the paper) what you want from this person. Say these things out loud as you write.
YOU CANNOT WISH THEM ANYTHING BAD. This spell works better if you wish them good things, as well as what you want to see. Continue writing, overlapping and on both sides of the paper if needed, until you’ve run out of things to say. Fold up the paper as small as you can and place in the Ziploc bag in the cup. Pour the water into the bag, squeeze out the air, and seal the bag -- MAKE SURE IT’S SEALED. Place this bag in the freezer. Thank the deities and put the candle out.
Forget about the bag, but leave it in the freezer until you feel confident this person is out of your life, or no longer a threat.

witches money bottle

Place all the objects into the bottle and cork/cap it. Seal the cork/cap with wax from altar candles. Say the following:

Bury the bottle near the front door of your home or set the bottle somewhere it can't be disturbed if you can't bury it.

Anointing, Charging, & Empowering Candles

Anointing with Oil was a common Biblical practice which continues today. In the Bible, people, places and things were anointed with Holy Oil. The ceremony of “anointing with Holy Oil” means to make Sacred, to consecrate or to set apart, and dedicate it for use unto our CREATOR. Yahshua has a triple anointing as Prophet, High Priest, and King.
YAHWEH instructed Moses how to prepare a Holy anointing oil, for anointing the Tabernacle, all of the religious objects used in it, and the priests (Exo.30:23-35; Lev.8:10-13). It was “compounded according to the art of the perfumer.” Some of the original ingredients have been lost in time, either because the herbs and spices used in ancient times have disappeared or corresponding names of today’s herbs and spices have changed.
The main ingredient is olive oil, which has both secular and Sacred purposes. The olive tree is very important in secular life for oil lamps, cooking, etc., and in religious life the Bible mentions it some 50 times. Pictured on the right, the olive tree has been a symbol of peace and prosperity since the time the dove returned to Noah’s Ark with an olive branch. The olive tree “epitomizes the Spirit of the Lord” and for that reason it was forbidden to cut it down in ancient times.
Today, quality anointing oil is generally made from the finest olive oil, pure myrrh, and frankincense. It is never-ever compounded on the Sabbath. And don’t even think about using any synthetic substitutes (Exo.30:38).
During anointing, the person customarily knelt while oil was poured or rubbed on the head or forehead. For extra special anointing, this Rite can be incorporated with the “laying on of hands” beginning with a kiss or hug (1Sam.10:1), and then ending in a prayer.
There are three types of Anointing for people: Sacred, medical and ordinary. The Apostle John writes in 1John 2:27, that anointing refers to a Sacred spiritual process in which the Holy Spirit empowers a persons heart and mind with YAHWEH’S truth and love. The Prophet Isaiah writes 10:27, “. . . the yoke [of the evil one] will be destroyed because of the anointing oil.” You can anoint yourself by taking some oil and place a small amount on your forehead and claim YAHWEH’S promise of HIS strength (Ps.92:10).
Today, many infant children are sprinkled with water and it is called a baptism. Technically, it is not a true baptism. Dedicating a child to our CREATOR and HIS path of righteousness is a good thing. But anointing the child with oil might be a better spiritual tool. And when that special day arrives, and dedication ceremony begins, it should be the parents invoking the Rite of Anointing. Priests should be spiritual coaches, not hired masters of ceremony.

Charms
Carrying a charm to attract love is easy, whether it's gemstones, herbs, or scented oils. Here are some suggestions.
Stones: For the following stones, first cleanse them by simply leaving them overnight covered in salt, to take the negativity out. Leaving them in direct sunlight for a day does the same thing. Then give them their new purpose by holding them in your hand, and visualize the stone being infused with feelings of love. A good way to do this is imagine the stone surrounded with pink light. Then carry the stones with you, if they are small enough.
-The most well known love attracting gemstone is rose quartz. It is available from a wide variety of places, really anywhere that sells gemstones. Carry it in your pocket with you to attract a mate. Rose quartz is also great for inducing feelings of peace and friendliness.
-Lodestone is well known for having magnetic qualities. For this reason, carry two of them...one to represent you, and one to represent a potential mate. Carry them with you.
-Ordinary rocks found on a riverbed or really anywhere, can be cleansed and charged with love energy, and carried just like gemstones. Look at their shape...finding a roughly heart-shaped stone is common. If not, choose one that appeals to you for any reason, and paint a love symbol on it (such as a heart or appropriate rune).
Herbs: Herbs, sewn up into a piece of cloth, can also be carried. I suggest pink or red fabric. Simply sew the herbs into it, and carry this little sachet with you to attract love. The following herbs are known love-attractors and are very easy to obtain from an herb store or in your garden. Use them alone or in groups of three. (some of these aren't "herbs", but rather plants and flowers)

Oils: Blending magickal oils is an art unto itself. So many wonderful scents can be combined to suit your needs. The scent is then worn to attract love (or other goals). Oils can be purchased at health food stores. I recommend using true essential oils, although they cost more than synthetic oils, simply because they have the power of the earth in them and are actually derived from plants or flowers, rather than created in a lab. Here are some for love related goals. These can be worn one at a time, or try blending some together.

Cast your protective circle.
Anoint your candle with the oil that you have chosen. This is done by placing a little of the oil on your fingertips. Grasp the candle at its midpoint with your left index finger and thumb, and use your right index finger and thumb to stroke oil on the candle from the midpoint up to the top of the candle. Next, grasp the candle at its midpoint with your right index finger and thumb, and use your left index finger and thumb to stroke oil on the candle from the midpoint down to the bottom of the candle. Continue in this fashion until the entire candle has been anointed. Anoint means to bless with oil. You are now ready to light your candle. It is important that you never blow out the candle. If you must put the candle out, use a snuffer or wave to blow it out.

Take your herbs from the altar and mix them together in the mortar and pestle, or bowl. Add about four drops of the patchouli or cinnamon oil to the herbs. As you mix the herbs under the pestle or with a spoon, ask the spirit of the herbs to assist you in the magick you with to create. Ask them to assist you in becoming prosperous. Visualize a green energy emanating from them as you say,
“I charge these herbs with the power of prosperity,
Please bring me, my family, and friends, happiness, health and prosperity,
Let abundance arise in my life,

Take the malachite stone into your hands, and hold it above the herbs. Ask the spirit of the stone to help you in your spell. Visualize green energy emanating from the stone, and say,
“I charge this stone with the powers of prosperity and success,
May a strength in this stone be strong and bring prosperity into my life.”

Place the malachite stone in the herbs. Take a pinch of the herbal mixture and sprinkle it onto the burning candle. Focus your energies on the burning candle. Close your eyes and visualize an orb of white light in the center of your body. See it pulsing and flowing with a radiant white light. Allow it to grow larger and larger until it begins to flow down through your arms and into the hands. Direct the energy from the light from your hands into the burning candle. Visualize it pouring into the candle. Once you see the candle glowing with light in your mind, begin to visualize prospertiy in your life. Actually see yourself getting a raise and having money flowing into your checking account. See yourself getting that pool in the backyard that you have been wanting. Visualize yourself getting that new car that you need or whatever it is that you desire. Be certain to be very specific in your visualization. The universe likes to see clearly what you desire. The magick works, I have done this spell many times without failure. Visualize the candle flow filling the entire room.

Add the seven silver dollars to the herbs saying,
“Bless me and my family with health, wealth, and prosperity,
In no way will this spell reverse,
Or place upon me any curse,
I now proclaim this spell is done.”
Let the candle burn out on its own in a safe place where it will not get knocked over. Place the herbs in a pouch to carry around in your purse or wallet. I like to sprinkle the herbs in my wallet, checkbook, and in my left shoe. Some witches will sprinkle the herbs at their front door and anywhere else that they wish to draw prosperity. Your spell is complete! Expect to see results over the next few months. This spell really works, I gave some of my spell to one of my coworkers and within four days received unexpected money in the mail of an extremely large amount! She called me while I was at work to tell me it was already working.

Close your circle by visualizing the circle or the perimeter of the circle coming up counterclockwise (widdershins), starting in the north, while chanting something such as
The circle is open but never broken.

Dressing Candles:
Dressing the candle with oil is as important as any other step. Use whatever oil you prefer or what a specific spell asks you to use. Personally, I use jojoba or olive oil a lot... but again that is my preference. What is important is the direction you dress the candle. To bring something to you, rub oil on the candle in a downward motion from the top to the middle and then from the bottom to the middle.
To send something away from you...you rub the oil from the middle of the candle out to the ends. Never make a back and forth motion as this defeats the purpose. Dab the remaining oil from your fingers onto your third eye (middle of your forehead). Then say the following:

“I cleanse and consecrate this candle. May it burn with strength in the service of the light.”

Then state your intent or the purpose of the candle.
Inscribing:
If you inscribe a candle you should use your Athame, nail, or some sharp object. The same principle as dressing the candle is used...
To draw something to you, write from the top to the middle, and then from the bottom to the middle. For the purpose of the prosperity spell, inscribe a dollar sign.
To repel things, write from the middle to the ends.

casting circles sacred space

Beginning to cast spells
Creating your own sacred place
My favorite place is a place in the woods and surrounded by tall pine trees. I sit on a cold boulder and ground myself. Being grounded is important. To "ground" visualize all of the stress flowing out of your body and feel strength coming up to your from the Earth so that you begin to feel a connection with the Earth. I am completely focused on the sounds of the woods. I can hear the water trickling in the nearby distance. It is the most peaceful place I have ever been. I go there often in my mind when I am in the city. I close my eyes and let my spirit drift there. it is the easiest place to connect with my spirit guide and my inner self. I will explain spirit guides, centering and grounding later in this book.
Now back to casting a circle in your house since many witches can not have easy access to the forest. Since I do live in the city, I most commonly use an alter to conduct my rituals and spells. This is an area that is used strictly for the sole purpose rituals and casting spells.

Casting Circles to make your Space Sacred

First, take a cleansing bath or be sure to at least wash your hands with sea salt. Your make up and attire is a personal choice. I prefer to be as clean and pure as possible. Be sure to cleanse your tools before using them. You can clean your ritual knife also known as an athame by dipping it in pure water (I make my water pure by leaving it out under the moonlight).
You need to create a sacred space for yourself before you can do any magickal work. To do this witches cast a circle between the worlds. Circle casting is an absolute necessity because you do not want any unwanted negative energies or entities to drop in on your ritual. This can be done physically or you can do it by visualizing it.
Using a wand made of white sage is a great way to cleanse your area of negativity. Light it and smudge the area with sage to rid the area being sure to leave a couple windows open so that the negativity can leave your house. These can be purchased at most stores that sell Wiccan goods.
Be sure to have all the necessary items together and place them on your alter. If you are performing your ritual outside, you can use a boulder or a log for your alter. When I am outdoors, I like to make a circle out of rocks that is about six foot to work in. Inside you can use string, rope, or a visualized circle. Now its time to cast you circle. Visualize your athame shooting the blue fire as you turn in a clockwise rotation. This way you are not having to leave your circle during magick. Start facing north, rotate clockwise ending back at the magnetic north.
Items for your alter can include candles, incense, athame, pentacle, bowl of pure water, bowl of sea salt, mortar and pestle, (or a large bowl), herbs, oils, crystals, candle holders, candle snuffer, incense holders, and any other special items. Be sure to take precautions so that you will not be disturbed by the phone ringing or people visiting you during the time that you are doing your work.
Place the elemental candle in each of the four corners. East is gold, South is red, West is blue, and north is green. Place a white candle some place on the alter.
The position of the alter really doesn’t matter because are working in a different realm, however, I think many witches prefer the magnetic north. Some witches do prefer to set their alters facing in the north, east, south, or even in the west.
Set up your alter with the items you will need before you cast your circle.
Visualize the tip of your wand or your finger creating a beam of blue flames, like a laser. Visualize the tip of your wand creating a circle around your alter or the area you intend to do your magick in. Visualize the circumference drawn by the wand’s tip as being cast in a blue flaming circle. Project the blue flaming light out of the wand to create the circle. Visualize a circle of burning blue fire that is about one foot high off of the ground.
say out loud,
“I cast this circle to protect myself from all negative energies that may cause harm.
I cast this circle to make this area sacred,
This sacred circle I cast tonight,
This sacred circle to perform this rite,
So mote it be.”
Stand before your alter and light the candles. This is when you can light your incense as well. You are now ready to create a magickal spell.
There are books that can give intricate details on casting circles, it can be a complicated procedure or it can be a simple process. I like to keep it simple. I use a basic cast to make the area sacred. Once it is done, you do not have to do it over each time you work in your alter area. You can also cast a circle in a hurry at any place any time by using your finger and visualizing the circle being cast. This is done usually to protect yourself or to do a spell public places. The basic idea is that you are creating a sacred circle to do your spell work in. You can use a broom instead of a wand if you like. Once you are finished doing your magick you simply close your circle.
Closing the circle
After the ritual, the circle may be taken up by visualizing the circle or the perimeter of the circle coming up counterclockwise (widdershins), starting in the north, while chanting:
The earth, the water, the fire, the air
Return, return, return, return.
You can make up your own words to use, I usually say something to the effect,
“In no way will this spell reverse or place upon me any curse.
I now proclaim this spell is done.
Casting circles is one of the most complicated aspects of spell working. Many people want to know where do the blue flames go when the spell is done? My answer is that you send it back into the earth. Visualize the flames or energy going back into the ground and dissolving. Which brings me to the next most common question, Do I have to recast a circle every time I do a spell. The answer I would be is yes. This is because spell work for me is done primarily for very important issues in my life. For this reason, I would like to know that I am protecting negative forces from entering my spell. Having unwanted negative energy in one’s life can be burdensome. However, I have done some spells in the traffic and in the woods where I did not have all of my tools. So, the answer is no, but it is a good idea to do so.
The circle is open but never broken.”
The idea is that you are closing your circle mentally and verbally. Visualize the blue energy swirling back into flames, and being drawn up into your athame, wand or forefinger. Ground the energy back into the earth.

spell for prosperity

Spell work
This is where is can get complicated. I have seen spells that involve formulas that would make a chemist confused. You can create a formula for your spell that has many correspondences that include factors such as the astrological phase, deities, herbs, powders, oils, incense, candles, stones, symbols, phase of the moon, and offerings for the deities if a deity is being called upon. All of these items can be used, but not entirely necessary and again this is a personal choice. For the purpose of this book I am keeping it simple and effective. The focus will be on the magickal intention. I almost always use a candle because it helps to keep the focus on the intent. Every time I see the candle burning it reminds me of my intention and that empowers the spell. When I see the candle burning I visualize the outcome and hold my focus on the outcome that I want to happen.
For most spells, a full moon is the best time to cast for banishing or getting rid of negativity such as a protection spell. Conversely, a full moon is the time to bring in things, such as a prosperity spell.
The use of herbs, oils, and stones is primary in most spells. I decide on what items to use by using a correspondence chart such as the one that I have provided. Again, I have everything available for what I will need before I do my spell work. This way, I do not have to leave my circle unless of course I forgot an item.
I use a correspondence chart to figure out what I will need for my spells. Other times I will use a spell that I found in a book, either way, I make sure to gather all the items before I begin. This avoids losing my concentration. For example, a green candle is used in rituals involving abundance, fertility, good fortune, money, wealth, success, and renewal. The use of a particular deity is a personal choice. For my prosperity spell I would also place a malachite stone on my alter, and the following herbs patchouli frankincense, sandlewood, vervain, cinnamon, dragon’s blood, jojoba oil, and seven silver dollars.
I have included some of my favorite spells, feel free to tailor it to your liking and comfort level using the spell worksheet that is in a appendix.

An affirmation to say with most spells:
Grant this desired wish to me, with your power and your love,
let it be three times three!
By the powers of air, fire, water and earth, I release this spell. I ask the Goddess for help this day.
With harm to none, this spell be done."

Take the malachite stone into your hands, and hold it above the herbs. Ask the spirit of the stone to help you in your spell. Visualize green energy emanating from the stone, and say,

Place the malachite stone in the herbs. Take a pinch of the herbal mixture and sprinkle it onto the burning candle. Focus your energies on the burning candle. Close your eyes and visualize an orb of white light in the center of your body. See it pulsing and flowing with a radiant white light. 1) What are chakras, why are they important, and how do they support our bodies?

Our bodies appear to be solid, but, in fact we are 99.99% empty space filled with energetic, vibrating atoms, according to quantum physicists. Our entire body vibrates at a basic frequency of approximately 8 cycles per second, which is the same frequency as the basic electromagnetic field of the Earth. We are literally attuned to the Earth.

Chakras (pronounced “Shock-Ruhs”) are whirling concentrated energy centers. They are measurable patterns of electromagnetic activity for receiving, assimilating, and transmitting life-perceived clairvoyantly, chakras appear as a colorful wheel or flower with a hub in the center, similar to fans with overlapping blades.

Chakras are located deep within the center of the physical body next to a hormonal gland along the spinal column. There are three currents or nadis, which flow in and around the spinal column, like the serpents spiraling around the caduceus (the familiar symbol used by the American Medical Association). The current on the left is the Ida, the feminine force of passion and emotion. The current on the right side is the Pingala, the masculine force of the intellect. Chakras are attached along the spine from the base to the top of the head and are held in place by the crossing of the invisible Ida and Pingala.

Chakras draw in Divine life-force energy (also called “ki”, “chi” or “prana”) from the Universe and distribute this vital energy to the physical glands and organs in the body and through the bloodstream and nervous system for optimum health and well being.

Chakras coincide with the body’s endocrine system. Each chakra has an influence over the endocrine glands and internal organs in that part of the body where the chakra is located. Sometimes, their influence covers a broader area.

The chakras also connect the spinal cord, the autonomic nervous system, and the endocrine system with our subtle body of vibration energy called the bioelectromagnetic field or aura. There are two primary electrical systems in the physical body. The first is the alternating electrical current of the nervous system and brain, which governs our muscles, hormones, and physical sensations.

The second is a continuous, electromagnetic radiation coming off our atoms which allows for an energy exchange between individuals and their environment. Each person’s unique energy field or aura makes up the person’s physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual states. Scientists in the field of energy medicine agree that this vibrating energy field stores coded information about our past, present, and future health.

Chakras originated in the ancient Hindu system of healing dating back to before 2,500 BC. Yogis have used the chakra system for thousands of years as an integral part of holistic healing. Every living being, including the Earth has chakras. There are hundreds of chakras within and around you, but most phsychics and healers are concerned with only the 7 major ones.

Some people are sensitive enough to see or feel the chakras. To try it for yourself, lie on your back and pass your hand over your front midline, from the public area to the top of your head, a few inches above your body. You may feel the chakras as intense concentrations of energy.

You may see the colors of the chakras with your inner eye or third eye even if you aren’t looking directly at them. This may be seen easier with your eyes closed using the inner eye. It may also be easier to try to see and feel the colors of a friend’s chakras rather than your own.

2) Where are the 7 main chakras and what are their related life issues?

Besides their role in maintaining our physical health, chakras also oversee various life issues. Each of the main 7 chakras reflects essential aspects of consciousness and governs our lives, loves, learning, and spiritual awakening.

The 1st Chakra (Root) governs Physical Needs and Security. The 2nd Chakra (Sacral) governs Sexuality, Emotions, and Desires. The 3rd Chakra (Solar Plexus) governs Power. The 4th Chakra (Heart) governs Love, Forgiveness, and Compassion. The 5th Chakra (Throat) governs Communication. The 6th Chakra (Brow) governs Intuition and Reasoning. The 7th Chakra (Crown) governs Spirituality and Understanding.

The chakras are interrelated; one affects another. The Root Chakra is the lowest of the 7 chakras and spins the slowest or resonates at the lowest of the 7 vibration frequencies. The Crown Chakra is the highest of the 7 chakras and spins the fastest.

Each chakra is also a different color. The colors are similar to a rainbow and go from Red (Root) – Orange (Sacral) – Yellow (Solar Plexus) – Green Heart) – Blue (Throat) – Indigo (Brow) – Violet (Crown).

3) What are energy blockages or energy imbalances in the chakras?

Imbalances in the chakras are known as energy blocks. When there is unreleased emotion such as fear, anger or guilt accumulated from past experiences or when there’s been a lack of nurturing, love, and encouragement during the developmental period, the energy flows less freely to/from the chakras.

Whenever a person blocks an experience, he/she blocks the flow of energy to/from their chakras. The chakras become blocked, clogged with stagnated energy, spin irregularly or backwards or can even become distorted or torn. When the chakras are functioning normally, each one will be open and spinning properly to metabolize the particular energies needed from the universal energy field.

If you were to completely think thoughts of love and faith, your body’s energy would flow smoothly between and around the chakras. You would probably feel happy and healthy. Fearful thoughts negatively affect your chakras’ ability to function. They cause the chakras to become dirty, shrunken or swollen. That is why you may feel out of sorts or lethargic and not know why. Obsessive thoughts cause the chakras to enlarge and become out of proportion.

When there is an energy imbalance in the chakras, the chakras tend to close down starting at the top chakra (Crown) and moving downward to the Root. Many people close down the top three chakras (Crown, Brow, and Throat) by the time they are three years old as a reaction to the disbelief of their parents and society in nature spirits, spirit friends, and past lives.

During the teenage years, the Heart or 4th Chakra often closes down or becomes blocked because of pain and rejection from parents, peers, and lovers.
The Solar Plexus or 3rd Chakra may close down or become blocked when parents and society force teens into molds they don’t fit.

By the time many of us reach adulthood, we have closed down all but the first 2 chakras (Root and Sacral) and even those often have imbalances due to energy blocks.

The closure or imbalance/energy blockage doesn’t usually occur in response to a single event. It’s the repetition of similar events without relief that eventually closes off the chakra or causes the imbalance/energy blockage.

After high school, there is usually less pressure to conform and some people begin to reverse the process and start opening their chakras. Usually the Solar Plexus/3rd Chakra opens before the Heart/4th Chakra and so on successfully upwards towards the Crown. But this isn’t always true. Some people don’t need to work on their higher chakras. It’s their lower chakras that need balancing. When your childhood and adolescence have been healthy and nurturing you may be balanced and open in every chakra.

4) Why do we want to identify and remove energy blocks/imbalances and balance our chakras?

Yogis knew that a person’s illness often first manifests in the chakras before the physical body. They knew that no one could be completely healed if the chakra system continued to be out of balance. When there is a blockage or imbalance in one part of the chakra system, it has an impact on all other chakras.

Imbalances occur when there is too much or too little energy flowing through the chakras. By understanding how each chakra affects a particular body function and life issue, it is possible to identify where a chakra is malfunctioning. Various techniques can then be used to balance the chakra system and restore health in the individual physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.

Holding negative thoughts causes chakras to become dirty with dense, dark energy. This prevents chakras from providing sufficient vital energy for the body. Unbalanced or “blocked” chakras create a whole range of mental, emotional, and physiological conditions.

Some say we come into this life with a certain set of life challenges already factored into our chakras. This partly determines our attitudes and behaviors.

Many therapists believe that the imbalances in our chakras are in part from our childhood and cultural experiences. They say that one of the ways we try and protect ourselves is by closing down the relevant chakra so we won’t feel those uncomfortable emotions. It is a defense mechanism.

5) What are some ways you can balance your own chakras and your clients’ chakras?

There are many ways to balance the chakras and clear any energy blockages/imbalances. Some useful therapies and tools are: Chakra Balancing, Inner Child Retrieval, Intuitive/Spiritual Counseling, Spiritual Healing, Mediumship, Past Life Regression.

There is also Strong Desire, Clear Intention, Love & Forgiveness, Prayer, Sound, Massage, Dowsing, Yoga, Reflexology, Astrology, Reiki, Mediation, Visualization, Toning & Chanting, Healthy Diet & Exercise, Tuning Forks, Music, Crystals & Gemstones, Aromatherapy, Flower Essences, Oils, Perfumes, Incense, Color, Introspections, and Journaling.

We are made up of vibrating atoms, which appear to those who can sense the subtle energies as color and sound. Color and sound are forms of energy, which vibrate. As the vibration of sound becomes higher and lighter, the sound is transmuted into color. Color is visible sound.

Both color and sound affect the chakras, especially when used together. Each of the chakras or energy centers is associated with a specific tone of the musical scale and with a specific color. Certain music and tones can help heal energy imbalances in the chakras by assisting the body to release unwanted thoughts and feelings and to come into its natural state of balance and harmony through deep relaxation and entertainment.

When our physical, emotional, mental or spiritual bodies are out of vibrational harmony and sound and color are projected into the chakras, correct vibrational patterns can be restored enhancing overall well being. Quartz crystals amplify, transform, store, focus, and transfer energy. They are used in microphones, radios, TV equipment, watches, laser tools, and computers. Crystals may have profound affects on the organs, tissues, and cells as well as the circulatory, endocrine, and metabolic systems. When thought energy interacts with a crystal, those thoughts are changed to harmonic forms, which change brainwave frequencies and can altar consciousness. Thus, positive intention or affirmation combined with crystals can provide wonderful healing results.

The laying-on-of-hands as in Spiritual Healing, Reiki, and Therapeutic Touch have also been found to be extremely effective in balancing the chakras when done by a knowledgeable, trained, and experienced practitioner. The willingness of the client to surrender to the Divine, to ask Spirit for assistance, and to willingly release and receive, is paramount to allowing Spirit to work. Chakras can also be helped back into balance during hands-on healing through entertainment. The body wants to vibrate at a healthy resonance and will readily move from an out of balance state towards a healthy state when healing energy is available.

Lower chakras spin lower than those in the upper body and head. Lower chakras relate to issues of the material world, while your upper chakras relate to more spiritual issues. The direction chakras spin is often described as clockwise, although some say they spin in alternating directions and vary in the direction depending on if you are a man or a woman.

The concept of open or closed chakras is an oversimplification since there are really varying degrees of openness that can be experienced in different chakras. Even though we may be able to assign some illnesses, ailments, and emotional/mental imbalances to the chakras, there are interpretations that defy categorization and require intuition for understanding.

When the energy in a chakra is deficient, it can be treated with color visualization of that chakra’s color of the opposite color called the antidote color to create balance. If the energy in the chakra is clearly excessive, it can be treated with the antidote color as it is visualized into the chakra as thought energy. For example, if a baby’s skin is too red, it is overly excited and could lead to condition such as heart troubles and high blood pressure later in life if it becomes habitual. You can help the baby and mother to relax by encouraging them to wear blue clothes, listen to soothing music, bringing in blue flowers, using blue light in the home, and other “blue” techniques.

The antidote for excessive red is blue and the antidote for excessive blue is red. The antidote for excessive Orange is indigo and vice versa. The antidote for excessive yellow is violet and vice versa. If someone has excessive sexual energy (Sacral/2nd Chakra imbalance-chakra color orange), the antidote would be indigo which would help make the person feel less nervous.

An alternate treatment would be to use yellow which strengthens the Solar Plexus/3rd Chakra-chakra color yellow and puts that person more in touch with his or her own gift which enhances their feeling of self-worth and makes the person less desperate for a sexual partner.

The personality will usually reflect the energy of the highest open chakra or the chakra with the most energy and focus. Illness and ailments respond well to treatments using color visualization in combination with other chakra balancing techniques already mentioned.

Other ways to use color vibration to help balance the chakras are by wearing clothing and jewelry with specific colors or by having certain colors in your home office. Surround yourself with various colors or by having certain colors in your home and office. Surround yourself with various colors of nature and flowers for balance as well. You can even ingest color vibrations as a food or juice or as colored water. Visualize the colors through your inner vision and absorb them as colored light. Through our senses of smell, we can also breathe the color essences or vibrations into our bodies through Aroma-Therapy.
Every day I give myself a bath, well that too, but this is a colorful light bath that clears and balances my chakra’s. I use it at the beginning of my day to protect myself and set my intentions. Here are steps on how you to can balance your chakra’s.

Begin by sitting comfortably. Take a deep breath in through your nose, and exhale out through your mouth. Do this three times. Now begin by picturing the white light of God and of Universal love swirling around you in a counter-clockwise motion, starting at your feet, and moving up towards your head. Picture this motion of white light going around you three time, each time starting at the bottom of your feet and moving upwards.

Crown Chakra

Next, start a little bit above your head, picture a purple (crown chakra – which brings in spirit) light swirling around, try counter-clockwise, if that doesn’t quite feel right, try moving the purple light in a clockwise motion.

How does it feel? Does it move easily, or does it feel hard to move the purple light around? If it feels “stuck” keep picturing this purple light moving in the direction you have chosen clockwise or counter-clockwise. Now take that purple light and picture it swirling around your body, swirling down toward your feet and back up again going in a clockwise or counter-clockwise motion. Once you have done this, you can move on, the purple light may be moving with ease, or feel heavy and stuck.

The heavy or stuck feeling just means that the chakra is unbalanced, but the more you work at this on a daily basis, the more it will open up and balance and begin to move with ease.

Moving the different color lights in a clockwise motion brings in energy to that chakra, moving the different color lights in a counter-clockwise motion repel incoming energy or protect that chakra.

Third-Eye Chakra

Now let’s move to the area on the forehead which is the third-eye chakra (which is your intuitive area). Begin by picturing an indigo color light in a circular motion clockwise or counter-clockwise, whichever “feels” easier or better. Picture it moving until you feel that it is clear or moving in an easy motion, now take that indigo light and swirl it around your body, in a clockwise or counter-clockwise motion down to your feet and back up to your head.

You can move the light up and down your body, once you feel you have finished with that particular chakra you are ready to move on.

Throat Chakra

Next is the throat area (throat chakra, which holds anger and the ability to speak up for oneself). Picture a light blue light going in a clockwise or counter-clockwise motion. Same as above until it moves with ease or you feel you need to move on.

Don’t expect all these chakra’s to have a “clear” or “easy” feeling the first time you do this. It may take several times before the chakra’s will change and become clear and balanced (the color moving with ease). Picture the blue light swirling around your body in a clockwise or counter-clockwise motion down your body to your feet and back up again to your head.

Heart Chakra

The chest area, which is known as the heart chakra (which is the center of love for self, and being able to love). This color is pink or green. Pick one of the colors and picture it moving in a clockwise. When you are ready you can then swirl it around your body and down to your feet and back up to your head.

Different chakra’s may move in different directions. They do not all have to go in the same direction, and will not always be the same, let your intuition be your guide.

Belly Chakra

The belly chakra color is orange (this relates to sexuality) repeat sequence as stated above. Moving the color light clockwise or counter-clockwise and then down and up the body.

Root Chakra

Lastly the root chakra color is red and located in the pelvic area (this relates to safety and security in all aspects of life). Swirl the color light in the chakra area and then down and up the body.

This mediation should begin to bring in healing colors and light into your spiritual being to help you to cope and deal with different aspects of your life in a meaningful way.

You will be more peaceful, life will make more sense, you will be spreading your rainbow of light around toward other people around you, and they will respond to you in am more positive way.

Another way in which I use this tool is to do this to friends and family who are having a difficult time. This is called distant healing. I can picture the person in my mind’s eye and send them the white light. I picture the white light starting at their feet and swirling it around their body three times. I then use the different color lights relating to each chakra; purple indigo, light blue, pink or green, yellow, orange, and red, using each color light and swirling it around their chakra and then down and up their body. I’m often told they feel more relaxed and more peaceful and better able to handle what is currently going on in their lives at that moment.

All about House Cleansing
At times the home may fall prey to storing negative energy, unwanted spirits/ghosts and other paranormal occurrences. This usually happens if there has been negative events within the home, such as violence, death, sickness, depression, or imbalance of the land etc. It can also occur due to spirits being drawn to a member of the household, or a spirit haunting a place due to unresolved issues. These events may be known to you, or they may have occurred prior to you living in the house in question. If you feel uncomfortable with the energy of your home, or you have had manifestations that are unwanted, it is advised that you have your home cleansed and blessed to prevent the negative energies from affecting you and your family.

Generally speaking there are two types of imbalance that can happen in a home. The first is the energy of the home being out of balance, and needing restoration. The home can absorb energy, and if the energy present in your home does not feel welcoming and calm, it may well need clearing to regain a sense of harmony. The second imbalance is for the home to be haunted by a spirit or ghost. In this situation there may be ghost or entity residing within the home that is out of place. Ghosts are the spirits of people who have not yet crossed over, and it is advised that they are assisted to do so, rather than to remain in this plane of existence. Most ghosts are not too troublesome, but there are situations where the spirit can have a very detrimental effect on those living within the house.

Following is a list of some of the types of manifestations that may occur in a house that requires cleansing.

- A feeling of unease, heavy energy, not feeling comfortable in your home
- Feeling like you are being watched
- Seeing things dart past you out of the corner of your eye
- Feeling like you have been touched or grabbed
- Hearing strange noises, voices, footsteps etc
- Seeing strange lights
- Objects being moved about the house
- Objects being shaken, broken, flung across the room
- Strange foul odors
- Nightmares that are not usual
- Bad energy affecting those in the house causing arguments, a feeling of being jinxed, or a run of bad luck
- Seeing full or part apparitions of spirits/ghosts/entities
- Extremes in temperature, usually cold
- Mists or clouds of smoke forming
- Dramatic change in personality and behavior of someone living within the house
- Animals that will not go into certain rooms
- Being physically attacked, held down, strangled etc by spirits/entities
- Doors slamming, lights blowing out and other violent manifestations

Obviously there is a wide range of possible manifestations that can occur. Some of the feelings may be intuited by you or others in your home, others still may present themselves to you in a very dramatic way. The important thing to remember is that you have the right to feel comfortable in your own home. For whatever the reason that the energy has become imbalanced, it is always a good idea to try to find out why, and to put an end to the disruption. Not all spirits that display manifestations in the home are negative, some are just lost or unable to move on, while others can be very nasty indeed.
If you feel that you would like your home or business cleansed and blessed I am able to do this by appointment. The process involves me coming to your address to sense what is out of balance in your home, followed by a ritualized cleansing. I like to use a mix of candles, incense, oils etc in conjunction with prayer (you are welcome to participate in the cleansing and blessing of you home). During a house blessing I will assess what is out of balance, make contact with any spirits that are within the property, clear the negative energy and help the spirit to cross over, as well as bless the property to ensure the home is protected and peaceful in the future. During the session I may also advise you on how to improve the energy of your home in simple ways, such as placement of objects and layout to encourage the best energy possible in your home. I have successfully performed house blessings and sprit clearings for dozens of families as well as working to improve the energy of retail shops and private business's.
Most house blessings take about an hour to perform, however this time can vary depending on the nature and intensity of the work required.

To begin with, the home or office has the ability to capture and hold low vibration and/or negative energy. Negative energy manifests through low vibration thoughts and ideas and is expressed mentally, physically or verbally. Anger, sadness, resentment, fights and arguments, bad thoughts or memories of events or people, hateful or harsh words spoken, etc in the home or office place can gather to develop negative energy.

In our daily lives we all have good days and bad days. Spaces where people are present, whether it is living, working or even just visiting, will collect all sorts of energies, some positive, some negative. In fact every person who visits a space, if even for a brief period, will leave energies behind that will linger. Doing a regular cleansing and purification, preferably every month, will clear these energies that accumulate and make for a much more peaceful and balanced abode

CLEANSING RITUAL
.

This ritual should also be performed whenever there is any major event, such as a death, an intense argument, or even if one is moving to a new dwelling so that all the negative energies can be cleared.

Make sure that all windows and doors are opened. Take a sage bundle and holding it over a fire proof vessel, light it. Walk clockwise around to each room in the entire home. Each room you come to walk clockwise around the room, while waving the sage bundle in a clockwise circular manner. Fill the rooms with sage smoke. Once the entire home has been smudged, taking extra care to get all closets and cabinets. Some people like to use a bell to get the spirits attention while doing this process.

Then wave the protection sage want clockwise around the room and over each opening while saying:

With Fire and Air,
I consecrate and protect this space.

Next, sprinkle a mixture of protection incense such as dragons blood, sandalwood, frankincense, myrrh, and sea salt around the entire inside of the perimeter of house against the walls, inside the closets, and especially across your doorways. Next, use holy blessed water sprinkle the holy water on your finger and put a cross or a pentagram on each window and doorway. If you do not have holy water, use salt water with spring water and sea salt. Do this in every room and at every window and door, as well as every other possible opening to the house such as outlets or phone jacks, draw a cross or an invoking pentagram using your finger dipped in the salt water. Draw the pentagram at every possible opening while saying:

With Water and Earth,
I consecrate and protect this space. You can use holy water if you like.

Repeat until the entire house has been consecrated in this manner. Repeat monthly, preferably at the full moon, or as needed.

One day, after celebrating Mass, the aged Pope Leo XIII was in conference with the Cardinals when suddenly he sank to the floor in a deep swoon. Physicians who hastened to his side could find no trace of his pulse and feared that he had expired. However, after a short interval the Holy Father regained consciousness and exclaimed with great emotion: "Oh, what a horrible picture I have been permitted to see!"

He had been shown a vision of evil spirits who had been released from Hell and their efforts to destroy the Church. But in the midst of the horror the archangel St. Michael appeared and cast Satan and his legions into the abyss of hell. Soon afterwards Pope Leo XIII composed the following prayer to Saint Michael, which is the original version:

Short Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel

The well-known short version of this prayer follows in English and Latin. The Pope ordered this prayer to be recited daily after Low Mass in all the churches throughout the Catholic world. Tarot History
Although researchers have tried for years to pinpoint the true origin of the Tarot, they are still unsure who created the first deck. Some believe they were in use as long ago as the early 1300's in Italy. Tarot is also known as Tarocchi, tarock. It is typically a 78 card deck, composed the major and minor arcane. Most of the divinatory meanings of the cards are derived from the Kabbalah of Jewish mysticism and from medieval alchemy.

Some time in the first half of the fifteenth century, somewhere in northern Italy, someone created the first set of tarot cards. Like the playing cards of the time, the tarot deck included number cards (1 through 10) in four suits, and court cards page, knight, and king. But the tarot deck had more: a queen was added to each of the courts, and 22 special cards, not belonging to any suit, were added. These special cards bore symbolic pictures, with such subjects as the Emperor, the Pope, The Wheel of Fortune, Death, the Devil, and the Moon.

The tarot cards were used to play a new type of card game, similar to bridge, but with 21 of the special cards serving as permanent trumps, which could be played regardless of what suit was led, and outranked all the ordinary cards. This Game of Triumphs, as it was called, became extraordinarily popular, particularly among the upper classes, and spread through northern Italy and eastern France. As the game spread to new locales, changes were often made in the pictures, and also in the ranking of the trumps, which usually bore no numbers. In time, tarot spread south to Sicily and north to Austria, Germany, and the low countries.

Centuries later, devotees of the occult arts in France and England encountered the tarot and saw mystical and magical meaning in the enigmatic symbolism of the cards. Their fascination with the cards led to the reputation tarot presently has as a divination tool and occult (hidden) artifact.

One objective of tarot history is to trace the many changes the cards have undergone through the centuries, as they were taken to different locales and redesigned by different artists and cardmakers. Many variant designs are beautiful, intriguing, or provocative, giving us a window on the popular culture of different times and places.

During the late 1700's and into the early 1800's Eliphas Levi, a Catholic Priest, writer, and teacher, created the basis for the most popular Tarot cards still in use today. Although Levi was born and trained for the Catholic Priesthood, he studied many other religions and subjects as well. He studied the Jewish, Hindu, Polish and Masonic religions and Cabalism. Levi was also a student of astronomy, astrology, and the metaphysics. When he created his first Tarot deck, he incorporated his knowledge of religions, the elements in nature (fire, water, earth, air), and what were believed to be powerful astrological events and symbols (most of which are still popular today). There are even references to scriptures from The Bible shown in some of the cards. Levi claimed he created the cards as a tool to aid his students in the art of spiritual enlightenment, self improvement, and self awareness.

It wasn't until the late 1800's that A.E. Waite realized that the cards could be used to predict possible future events. Waite created the Rider-Waite deck based on the works of Eliphas Levi, and published the cards in 1896. The Rider-Waite Tarot deck is the most widely used version currently in existence.

Arcanum is singular, Arcana is plural and the term means "secret." (Latin)

Where the Major Arcana cards are thought of as the "power" cards or big players in a reading, the Minor Arcana serve in supportive roles and augment the reading with further insight and detail of circumstances.

Court cards within the Minor Arcana are (referred to as “face cards” in a regular playing deck) the court players within the suite: Kings, Queens, Knights and Pages.

We delve a little deeper in understanding a tarot card deck by further breaking down the Minor Arcana into four suits. The four suits are:

Every subject has its own terminology and body of basic knowledge. Tarot history is no exception. The entries in this glossary should help the newcomer to the field gain familiarity with the terminology.

Belgium, Belgian Tarot: The earliest surviving Belgian tarots, also known misleadingly as "Cartes de Suisses", date from the early 18th century. Although the trumps follow the Marseilles ordering, several of the designs are quite different: The Papess and Pope are replaced by the Spanish Captain and the wine-god Bacchus; Temperance bears a staff, and the Tower is replaced by a picture of lightning striking a tree. The Belgian tarot may preserve designs from an Italian pattern (possibly the Tarocco Bolognese), introduced to France independently of the Milan/Marseilles version.

Bembo, Bonifacio: Milanese court painter, to whom some of the Visconti-Sforza cards are attributed.

Besançon, Tarot de Besançon: a variant of the Tarot de Marseille was made in eastern France, Switzerland and Germany, from the early 18th century. The Papess and Pope are replaced by the pagan deities Junon and Jupiter. The Tarot de Besançon became the model for the Swiss Tarot.

Betts, Timothy: In Tarot and the Millenium (1998), mathematical physicist Timothy Betts argues that the tarot trumps tell the story of an apocalyptic prophecy, sequel to the Biblical book of Revelation, that was popular in the 14th century.

Boiardo: a late 15th-century writer who created a variant tarot-like game with cards representing virtues, vices, and other qualities of moral character.

Bologna, Tarocco Bolognese: Besides having a distinctive order and distinctive card designs, the Tarocco Bolognese is interesting in two other respects: the Papess, Empress, Emperor, and Pope are all of equal rank and were replaced by four identical "moors" in the 17th century, and the number cards 2 through 5 in each suit were ommitted, making a reduced deck of only 62 cards. For this reason, the Bolognese game is called tarocchino (little tarot).

Cartes de Suisses: see Belgium.

Cary sheet: an uncut sheet of woodblock tarot cards, delicately drawn, dating from around 1500. The sheet is probably from Milan, but shows designs in many cases strikingly similar to those of the Tarot de Marseille.

Cary-Yale Visconti (Visconti Modrone): one of the lavish hand-painted decks associated with the ducal families of Milan. This deck has an extended system of court cards, with female pages and knights in addition to the male ones. The trumps include the theological virtues of Faith, Hope, and Charity. Because many cards are missing, the complete list of trump subjects is not known. See Visconti-Sforza.

Charles VI cards: see Gringonneur cards.

Conver, Nicolas: a French cardmaker whose 1760 Tarot of Marseilles is taken as a classic example of the pattern.

cosmograph: a representation of the fundamental elements of reality and the relationships between them. In narrow terms, a cosmograph is a map of the universe. Taken more broadly, an abstract structure, such as the qabalistic Tree of Life, is also a type of cosmograph.

Della Rocca: an artist working for the Milanese cardmaker Gumppenberg. Around 1835, Dellarocca produced a very fancy engraved tarot deck (generally known as Soprafino Tarot), which became the basis for later Tarocchino Milanese designs.

Double-headed: cards that appear the same when turned upside down, like the court cards in a modern poker deck. Modern Piedmontese and Bolognese tarots are double-headed, the Tarocco Bolognese being one of the earliest decks of cards to acquire this feature.

D'Este Cards: A lavish hand-painted deck from the 15th century, presumably owned by the D'Este family, rulers of Ferrara.

Dummett, Michael: In The Game of Tarot (1980), logician Michael Dummett chronicles in prodigious detail the history of the tarot, focusing on the many variations of the tarot card game. The book also recounts the changes in card design and ordering that occurred as the tarot spread and evolved through the centuries. In A Wicked Pack of Cards (1996), Dummett and co-authors Thiery DePaulis and Ronald Decker relate the history of the French occultists, whose writings resulted in the transformation of the tarot from card game to occult divination tool. In both books, Dummett contends that there is no special significance to the original symbolism of the cards.

Gringonneur cards (Charles VI cards): an early set of hand-painted tarot cards, mistakenly identified with a set of regular playing cards made by Gringonneur for Charles VI of France in the 14th century. The cards probably date from the late 15th century.

Kaplan, Stuart: tarot collector and publisher, owner of US Games, Inc. In The Encyclopedia of Tarot, Kaplan illustrates a huge number of tarot decks (Volume I contains a sampling of the most important decks from different times and places; Volume II contains historic decks; Volume III is devoted to modern decks). Volume II also includes a detailed survey of trump names and orderings from early decks and documents, a good summary of Renaissance symbolism pertaining to the cards, and information on Petrarch and the Visconti and Sforza families.

Ferrara: One of the Italian cities in which tarot first became popular. Most scholars believe that the tarot was invented either in Milan or in Ferrara. Ferrara was ruled by the D'Este family, who owned one of the earliest hand-painted decks.

Flanders, Flemish Tarot: see Belgium

Florence: one of the major cities of the Renaissance. In the 16th century, a variant form of tarot called Minchiate was invented in Florence. There was also a 78-card Florentine tarot deck, but no certain examples of it have survived.

French-suited tarot: beginning in the 18th century, cardmakers began to produce tarot decks using the new French suit system (clubs, hearts, spades, diamonds). The traditional trump subjects were replaced by animals, scenic landscapes, and other decorative designs. The French-suited tarot cards became very popular in Austria, Germany, and the Netherlands. They are often called Tarock packs, this being the German word for tarot.

Gabriel: The archangel Gabriel is a divine messenger, announcing both the birth of Jesus and the second coming. He is depicted with his traditional trumpets on the Angel (Judgement) card of the tarot.

Geofroy, Catelin: a 16th-century French cardmaker who produced a luxury deck with nonstandard suit signs. The trump sequence, apparently, follows the odering of the Tarot de Marseille, making this deck the earliest example of the Marseilles ordering.

luxury deck: a deck designed to be especially decorative and appeal to collectors. Usually, such decks do not follow the a standard pattern very closely, and do not influence the subsequent evolution of the standard pattern.

Mantegna (Tarot of Mantegna, Tarocchi di Mantegna): a set of engravings dating from c.1470, depicting the estates of man (ranks of society), the muses, the liberal arts and sciences, the virtues, and the celestial spheres. Many of the designs closely resemble tarot designs. Despite the name, the Tarot of Mantegna was not a tarot deck and was not made by the famous Renaissance artist Andreas Mantegna. Its purpose was apparently to illustrate a Neoplatonic philosophical system of the structure of the cosmos. The engravings were probably the work of an artist from Ferrara.

Marseilles, Tarot de Marseille: the most widely circulated variant of the tarot is the Tarot de Marseilles ("Tarot of Marseilles" in English). These designs, and the Marseilles ordering of the trumps, became the basis for occult and modern tarot decks. The Marseilles tarot itself almost certainly originated in Milan, and spread to France when the French occupied that city around 1500.

Metropolitan Museum sheet: An uncut sheet of woodblock tarot cards, dating from around 1500. They may be examples of the Tarot of Ferrara or Venice, which otherwise have not survived.

Michael: The archangel Michael is a dispenser of Justice, appearing in this role at the Last Judgement. He is traditionally depicted with sword and scales, closely resembling the personification of Justice as a cardinal virtue.

Milan: One of the Italian cities in which tarot first became popular. Most scholars believe that the tarot was invented either in Milan or in Ferrara. The earliest surviving decks, the Visconti-Sforza, are from Milan. The popularity of tarot in Milan declined greatly in the 17th century, and the decks used in Milan (and throughout northern Italy) in the 18th and 19th centuries are variants of the Tarot de Marseille, reintroduced to Italy from France early in the 18th century.

Minchiate: In the 16th century, a variant form of tarot called Minchiate was invented in Florence. A Minchiate deck includes 20 additional trump cards: the signs of the zodiac, the four elements, and the four virtues (Prudence, Faith, Hope, and Charity) missing from the standard tarot. Minchiate was also called Gemini or Germini, and became very popular from the 17th through the 19th centuries, in places as far away as Sicily, Genoa, and even France.

Mitelli: an engraved luxury deck was made by artist Giuseppi Maria Mitelli of Bologna in 1665.

Moakley, Gertrude: In The Tarot Cards Painted by Bonifacio Bembo (1966), librarian Gertrude Moakley connects the symbolism of the Visconti-Sforza tarot cards with the triumphi paradigm and Visconti family history. O'Neill, Robert: In Tarot Symbolism (1986), biologist Robert O'Neill examines a wide range of philosophical and cultural influences that might have contributed to the design of the tarot, concluding that the cards are a pictorial synthesis of the philosophical and theological ideas of the time, particularly the Neoplatonic concept of a hierarchy of intermediaries through which humans may approach mystical union with the Divine.

Paris: A 17th-century luxury deck, made in Paris, resembles both the Viéville Tarot and the Belgian Tarot but also includes many novel trump designs.

pattern: see standard pattern.

Petrarch: a 14th-century writer whose poem I Trionfi describes a series of allegorical triumphs (Love, Chastity, Death, Fame, Time, and Eternity) somewhat reminiscent of the tarot sequence.

Pierpont-Morgan/Bergamo Visconti-Sforza: the most beautiful and most nearly complete set of hand-painted Visconti-Sforza cards, probably made to commemorate the ascension of Francesco Sforza to the ducal title in 1450. Most of the cards were probably painted by court painter Bonifacio Bembo, although some (Fortitude, Temperance, Star, Moon, Sun, and World) are apparently replacement cards by a Ferrarese artist. The Devil and Fire (Tower) cards are missing from the set.

Pope Joan: a well-known legendary figure of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Joan was a woman who ascended to the papacy disguised as a man, only to have her secret revealed when she collapsed in childbirth during a processional. As the only widely known "female pope", she may be the model of the tarot Papess.

Rome: It is unlikely that Rome ever had its own distinctive form of tarot. If tarot was played in Rome, the Tarot of Florence or the Minchiate were probably used.

Rosenwald sheet: an uncut sheet of woodblock tarot cards, dating from about 1500, using very simple designs. The designs may have been a predessor to the tarot of Florence.

Rothschild sheet: actually two uncut sheets of woodblock tarot cards, one in the Rothschild collection and another in Budapest, dating from about 1500. The designs appear to be an early form of the tarot of Bologna.

Sforza, Francesco: fourth duke of Milan, reigning from 1450 to 1466. His claim to the title was based on his marriage to Filippo Visconti's illegitimate daughter Bianca, and enforced through military conquest of the city three years after the Filippo's death. The Visconti-Sforza cards, particularly the almost complete Pierpont-Morgan/Bergamo set, combine Sforza and Visconti heraldry, and were probably commissioned by Sforza.

Sicily, Tarocco Siciliano: Tarot was introduced into Sicily relatively late, reportedly in the seventeenth century. The unusual Sicilian Tarot, or Tarocco Siciliano, is derived from the Tarot of Florence, but has many unique designs. The Sicilian deck, like the Tarocco Bolognese, is shortened by omitting low-numbered cards in each suit.

Sola Busca: a variant tarot deck, dating from the late 15th century. It has "ancient warriors" in place of the usual trump subjects, and has pictorial illustrations on the pip cards. Some of these illustrations served as models for Pamela Colman Smith when she created the famous Waite-Smith deck in 1909. There is an excellent web site devoted to the Sola Busca deck.

standard pattern: a set of designs that is followed closely from printing to printing. When a deck of cards wears out or cards become lost, players generally prefer to replace the deck with another using the same familiar designs. Hence cardmakers tend to update their designs little if at all. The Tarot of Marseilles is an excellent example of a standard pattern. The designs remained essentially the same over a period of at least three centuries, even though they were made by many different printers in many different cities.

Steele sermon: a sermon condemning the game of tarot, written by an unknown cleric in the late 15th century. It contains the earliest listing of the tarot trumps.

Swiss Tarot: An artistic engraved tarot design originating around 1830, based loosely on the Tarot de Besançon. Often called Swiss 1JJ, the "JJ" refers to Junon and Jupiter, which replace the Papess and Pope in this deck. The Swiss Tarot includes many unusual designs in the trumps, some of which may reflect early Italian designs.

tarocchi: The Italian form of "tarot". The etymology of the word is unknown. Tarocchi is plural, the singular is tarocco. The term came into use in the 16th century, due to confusion over the use of the older name, trionfi.

tarocchi appropriati: a 16th-century literary form consisting of verses comparing various persons (typically ladies of the court) with the tarot trumps.

tarock: see French-suited tarot.

tetramorph: a standard religious emblem in which four living creatures (bull, lion, eagle, and angel) representing the four gospels are arrayed at the corners of a central mandorla. The tetramorph is seen on the World card in the Tarot of Marseilles and related decks.

triumphi (triumphs, trionfi): Latin for "triumphs" (Italian trionfi). Tarot cards were originally known as carte da trionfi, or cards of triumphs. The 14th-century poet Petrarch wrote a famous poem called I Trionfi, in which a series of allegories, each more powerful that the last, triumphs over the one that came before. The word also refers to the triumphal processions, dating from Roman times, in which a victorious commander would ride into the city on a chariot, with captives in tow, a practice that is ancestral to modern-day parades. Moakley has suggested that the triumphal processions, and particularly Petrarch's allegorical rendition of the theme, served as a model for the Triumph Cards now known as tarot.

trump: a corruption of the Italian trionfo, or triumph. The term refers to the special symbolic cards of the tarot, which "triumph" over the ordinary cards in play. The Fool is sometimes considered a trump, but more often is called "the excuse", since it never wins a trick but may be played at any time, regardless of which suit is led.

Venice: although there is a long tradition of referring to certain tarot designs as "Venetian", and many early references to tarot cards are associated with Venice, there are no surviving cards that can be positively identified as Venetian. The game of tarot was probably not played there much after the 16th century.

Viéville, Jacques: the maker of a French tarot deck (c. 1650) which differs from the Tarot de Marseille, but resembles the later Belgian Tarot. Two of the cards have the titles of the trumps inscribed on them, presumably as a reference for players.

Visconti, Filippo Maria: third duke of Milan, reigning from 1416 to 1447. Some of the Visconti-Sforza cards were probably commissioned during his reign.

Visconti-Sforza: the earliest surviving tarot decks were expensive works of art created for the Visconti and Sforza families who ruled Milan in the 15th century. Several different decks were made. The most well known is the Pierpont-Morgan/Bergamo deck, which is missing only four cards. The other decks are all less complete. The Cary-Yale/Modrone deck apparently included 6 court cards in each suit (knights and pages were given female counterparts), and had additional trumps, including the theological virtues Faith, Hope, and Charity.

Freezer Spell

This is a spell that can be used to stop someone from harming you, others or themselves. It also works to stop gossip, or to even help yourself kick bad habits. Copyright to Hedgewitch Hollow. DO NOT reproduce in any way. For personal use ONLY.

What you need:

-ziplock baggy
-water
-freezer
-paper with the person's name OR a photo of the person OR both, Adding their birthdate will also connect it to them further. You can even take a photo and put their name and birthdate on the back of it.

What you do:

1) Put some water in the Ziplock bag, close it, and put it in the freezer. Wait for the water to freeze.

2) Take the name of the person OR the photo of the person you wish to freeze and put it in the baggy, then fill with water until it's covered. Add a pinch of mugwort or cayenne pepper. Close the bag and put back in the freezer, and wait for the water to freeze.

3) If the paper/photo isn't fully covered in ice yet, add some more water, and freeze again.

4) Leave the baggy in the freezer. This will keep the person/habit "on ice" throughout the time you have the baggy in the freezer.

Phases of the Moon

The lunar phase is important in determining the best time for magick. There are basically two lunar phases: waxing moon (ideal time for positive magick) and waning moon (ideal time for banishing/negative magick, study, and meditation). In between you'll have the dark moon (the time of greatest power for banishing and negative magick) and the full moon (the time of greatest power for positive magick).

Most witches and pagans work around these lunar phases. However, others, like Silver RavenWolf, suggest a much more complicated subdivision of the moon phases. Here I'm providing Silver RavenWolf's moon phases as they appear in her book To Stir a Magick Cauldron.

New Moon Magick (from the day of the New Moon to 3 1/2 days after)

Timing: The magick should be performed between dawn and sunset for the best use of this magick.
Conjuring: beauty, health, and self-improvement; farms and gardens; job hunting; love and romance; networking

Crescent Moon Magick (from 3 1/2 days after the new moon through the 7th. day)

Timing: The moon rises at mid-morning and sets after sunset.

Moon Void of Course

It's said that the moon is void of course before it enters a new moon sign (Cancer, Leo, Virgo...). There is a sort of dead space when this is happening. The rule here is to avoid doing any important magick work while the moon is avoid of course. Don't do any major magick work. Don't complete any magick work.

Moon Signs

The moon continuously moves through the Zodiac, from Aries to Pisces, picking the influences of the astrological signs. A working witch takes this into consideration when planning a ritual or a magick spell.

What is with the Moon?
Witches celebrate the feminine energy of the moon by holding a ritual every month on the night of the full moon. These rituals are called Esbats. The moon is the symbol of the Triple Goddess (Maiden, Mother, Crone). The moon is perceived as female, she is cyclic like the menstrual cycle in the female. Different phases have different magick associated with it.

Full Moon is the time from three days prior to three days after the full moon. It is traditional for covens to meet on the full moon. The full moon is the time of the moons greatest power. This is a time for banishing negative influences. This is also a very powerful time for divination.

Drawing down the moon-There are many ways of doing this. It can be done as an elaborate ritual or it can be a simple procedure. A good book to read is Drawing Down The Moon by Margot Adler if you want more details on the practice of drawing down the moon.

Drawing down the moon is one of my favorite things to do
I cast a protective circle with my athame. I open my chakras and stand in the Goddess Position. I hold the wand in my right hand and point it at the moon. I envision the light of the moon entering my body through my third eye. Sometimes I will stand under the moonlight for an hour and let my body soak up the moonrays. I can tell when I should stop because I let myself get into a trance-like state of mind. I can feel the energy raise in my body and instincly know when I have had enough. It is such an invigorating feeling. This is probabbly my favorite ritual to perform. It is important when you are finished with this procedure to ground yourself. I like to place my hands on the ground and center myself. I then close the circle and step out of it.

Waning Moon-This is the time between the full and new moon. This is when the moon is growing smaller and is a good time for magick involving rejections and banishing negative influences. Spells begun on the full moon can be reinforced during the waning moon. This is a good time for banishing bad habits, addictions, and negative emotions.

New Moon-This is the period of three days before through three days after a new moon. This is the time for magick involving personal growth and all beginnings. This is a good time for blessing a new project and starting new employment.

Waxing Moon is the time between the new and full moon. This is when the moon is growing larger and is good for magick involving attractions. This is a good time for attraction, healing, and luck magick.

Dark of the Moon-The three days before the new moon is called the dark moon. Traditionally, magick is not preformed during this time period. It is a time for reflection and meditation. Hectate rules this moon phase and it can be a time to reverse spells and do some heavy banishing if needed.

Blue Moon-The second full moon in any given month is called a blue moon.

Esbats and Sabbats
The sun waxes and wanes during the year, so does the moon. Just as the Sabbats are a celebration of the cycle of the sun. Esbats celebrate the cycle of the moon. Unlike Sabbats, Esbats may be celebrated at any time during a single lunation with certain times corresponding best with specific types of spells. There are 13 moons during our 12 month year with the 13th being the Blue moon

Sabbats
With most aspects of Witchcraft the sabbats, or assemblies at which Witches meet on certain days of the year, have been distorted by Christianity. Most of these distortions evolved out of the witch-hunts which occurred during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The sabbats were depicted as meetings where obscene behavior such as having sex with the devil and eating unbaptized babies.
However, the origins of the sabbats seem to be a mixture of rites that still exist, such as the Druid festivals of Beltane (observed April 30) and Samhain (observed October 31), and the entrenched idea that heretics held obscene rituals. Possibly the sabbats also are related to the Bacchanalian and Sutumalian rites observed by the Greeks and Romans. The term sabbat is from the Old French and is partially derived from the Hebrew Shabbath, "to rest," which pertains to the seventh day of the week as designated by the Ten Commandments in the Bible as a day devoted to rest and worship.
The witches’ modes of transportation to the sabbats were quite imaginary. Witches were said to have flew through the night either on the backs of demons that turned into their familiars which were usually animals, or astride of broomsticks. They were said to fly home before daybreak.

Sabbats of modern Witchcraft:
Sabbats observed by Witches of modern Witchcraft are not diabolical and have nothing to do with the devil or demoniacal worship. Usually they are considered to be eight seasonal holy days of the year which correspond to the former pagan seasonal festivals.
The rites celebrated at the sabbats are centered in nature. They contain the ancient pagan customs of Europe and the British Isles, especially the Celtic traditions. Not all traditions, however, celebrate the eight sabbats, but only observe those important to their history and customs. They observe the sabbats in their own way, some skyclad (nude), while others in traditional or ceremonial dress, while others create new practices. The sabbats of Beltane and Samhain are the most universally observed.
The Greater sabbats and their observation dates are: Oimelc (also Imbolc, Imbolg), February 2; Beltane (also Beltaine, Walpurgisnacht ), April 30; Lughnasadh (also Lammas), July 31; and Samhain, October 31. The Lesser Sabbats fall on the solstices and equinoxes: winter solstice, December 22; spring equinox (Ostara), March 21; summer solstice, June 21; and autumn equinox, September 21.
Winter solstice: December 22. The winter solstice marks the longest night of the year. It is when the Goddess awakes to find that she is pregnant with the Sun God. The rituals for both the summer and winter solstices are designed to help change the course of the sum. The winter solstice has been Christianized as Yule or Christmas.
Oimelc: February 2. A winter purification and Fire Festival, often called the Feast of Lights, Imbolc or Imbolg which means "in the belly" and signifies the growing of life in the womb of Mother Earth. It celebrates Brigid (Brigit), the Irish Celtic goddess of fire, fertility, crops, livestock, wisdom, poetry, and household arts. Oimelc brings the first signs of life in the darkness of the Earth. The Goddess prepares for the birth of the Sun God. This sabbat has been named Candlemas in Christianity, also called St. Brigid’s Day. It is celebrated by candlelight processionals and commemorates the Presentation of Christ in the Temple (Eastern Church) or the Purification of the Virgin Mary (Western Church). Oimelc, also, corresponds with Ground Hog Day.
Spring equinox: March 21. Lady Day or Vernal Eqinox. This is a solar festival, in which day and night, and the forces of male and female, are equally balanced. As spring reaches its midpoint, night and day stand in perfect balance, with light on the increase for summer. This is the first day of spring, which marks the birth of the infant Sun God and makes way for the lushness of summer. The Christianizing of this sabbat is Easter.
Beltane: April 30. One of the great Celtic solar festivals, celebrated in ancient times with bonfires. Beltane rites celebrate birth, fertility and the blossoming of all life, as personified by the union of the Goddess and the Sun God, also known in Christianized lore as King Winter and Queen May. The celebrants jump over broomsticks and dance around maypoles, both are fertility symbols. The sabbat begins at moonrise on Beltane Eve. Beltane bonfires are believed to bring fertility to crops, homes and livestock. People dance deosil, or clockwise, around the fires or creep between the fires for protection against illness. Cattle are driven through the fires for protection against disease. Ancient Druids lit bonfires on hills and uttered incantations. When Beltane was Christianized by the Church, the pagan rites were replaced with church services and processionals in the fields, where the priests lit the fires.This festival also is known as Walburgisnacht.
Summer solstice: June 21. A solar festival which was almost universally celebrated. In the European tradition, the night before was Midsummer’s Eve; a time for great magick , especially for love charms. Certain herbs were picked at midnight to bring protection against lightning, fire, witchcraft, disease and ill fortune. Witches and fairies roam on Midsummer’s Eve, as they do at Beltane; there is a bit of madness in the air. Great bonfires are lit to help change the course of the sun in the sky, the rites resemble those of Beltane. The sabbat was Christianized to St. John’s Day (for John the Baptist).
Lughnasadh: July 31. A great festival of games and dance, named in honor of the Irish Celtic solar god Lugh. The word Lughnasadh is related to words meaning "to give in marriage" and once was associated with marriage contracts. Nine moths away is the next Beltane, the birth of summer and life. According to medieval legend, the festival celebrates Lugh’s marriage to "the Sovranty of Ireland," the goddess Eriu. A hag, Eriu is transformed into a beauty who personifies the land of Ireland.
Lammas, from Old English terms for "loaf" and "mass," is a Christianized name for an old Saxon fruit-and-grain festival designated by the early English church. The holiday celebrated the ripening of apples and winter wheat, the latter of which, according to tradition, was made into loaves and blessed in the church. Lammas Day also was a day to settle accounts. In Scotland, tenant farmers took their first grain harvests to their landlords on August 1 to pay the rent.
Autumn equinox: September 21. Once again, day and night, and male and female forces are equally balanced. This is the time for the second harvests.

Samhain: October 31. An ancient Celtic festival which celebrates the beginning of winter, marked by death, and the beginning of the Celtic New Year. Samhain means "end of summer." The veil between the worlds of the living and dead is the thinnest during this time making communications easier. Souls of the dead can come into the land of the living. Samhain is a time for eliminating and banishing unwanted habits and objects in one’s life. Samhain was Christianized into All Hallow’s Eve or Halloween. The modern custom or trick-and-treating may have originated from an old Irish peasant custom of going door-to-door to collect money, breadcake, cheese, eggs, butter, nuts, apples and other foods in preparation for the festival of St. Columb Kill. Apples are included in many rites, especially as ingredients in brews.

BOS Book Of Shadows

Your BOS (Book of Shadows)
Every witch should have a book of shadows. It is a documentation of your thoughts, spells, experiences and dreams. It is a diary of sorts. You can make it however you want to make it. My BOS contains my spells, correspondences, magickal powders, and personal experiences with the different spells that I cast. Some witches keep their BOS on a computer. When I first started out , my BOS was a huge three inch three ring binder with dividers. Currently, my BOS is a big gothic looking black book with a pentacle on it with blank pages inside of it. I like to write in it with a calligraphy pen using an ink called Doves Blood. Now, my blog will become my new book of shadows and I will share most all of my work. I will still keep my private BOS, and that is just because it is so very personal to me.

What is Wicca?
Wicca, sometimes called “The Craft” an earth-based religion. The religion which is closest to Wicca in America is Native American spirituality. Wiccans observe the eight Wiccan Sabbaths, honoring the Gods and/or Goddesses. Wiccans create a sacred space for rituals. Many Wiccans belong to a coven but a lot practice their religion as a solitary.
Witches use the natural energies within themselves, along with the energies of herbs, stones or other elements to make changes around them. The skills and gifts that are part of witchcraft can be inherited from parents or grandparents, however, that does not automatically make you a witch. The use of magick takes practice, experience and learning.
Magick is the manipulation of natural forces and psychic energy to bring about desired changes. It is the alchemical marriage of earth, air, fire, and water and use the magickal and healing properties of herbs, plants, trees, crystals, colors, stones, and astrological energies to enhance and empower.
Different Traditions
There are many different types of traditions of witchcraft, such as Alexandrian, British, Strega, Teutonic, Dianic, Gardnerian, and the list goes on. Personally, I believe that a witch is a witch! Most likely, all witches could be classified as a kitchen witch. Most every witch is in some way, eclectic and focuses on magick and spirituality, centering around the kitchen and home.
You know that old saying, if it walks like a duck…it’s a duck. To say that you are simply a witch pretty much sums it up. I personally like the word witch. If asked, I will say that I am a witch and that I practice witchcraft. Occasionally, if I am not comfortable with the person that I am talking to I will use the word Wiccan as to not “scare” them.

White Witch or Black Witch?
I do not believe that magick is good or evil. It is how we choose to use it that matters. I do not believe that there is a devil but I do believe that people can use magick in a negative manner. I believe that what we do will come back to us; like the old adage of “What goes around comes around.” I believe that we have to respect the light and the dark side of ourselves. I understand that there is good and bad in all humans. It is understanding ourselves and controlling ourselves that is difficult.
It is therefore a freedom of choice how to use magick. Many witches will agree with me when I say, “A witch that does not know how to hex, does not know how to heal.” That is not my own quote but that of the famous Z Budapest. If you think about it
we must embrace our light and dark side in order to appreciate the good in ourselves and others. A witch knows that if he or she casts a hex on another and does harm it will come back on themselves. If a person loves the spirit with in them, they will not take such careless and harmful risks.
Picking a magickal name and the reason for it
For most witches, choosing a witchy name has to do with the feeling that they go through a huge transformation once they have decided to become a witch. By changing their name to something that more suits them, they get closer to the Self and Perfect Balance. Some witches have more than one magickal name; one for public use and a private one that is only used in ritual with the Goddess and God. The use of two or three names are not necessary though, only a choice of the individual.
According to Raymond Buckland, It used to be that, to know someone's name was to have a power over them - for if you knew the name of your enemy you could conjure with it. It also gives the witch some cloak of mystery and hidden identity to outsiders. There is no rule that says you much change it. If you do decide to choose a name pick one that you feel fits your personality.

How magick works
There is a universal knowledge and power that we have the ability to tap into. We have the energy inside of us and we can get energy from the universe as well.
Magick starts with mind control and concentration. Magick consists of a lot of visualization. It is about focusing on what you want and making it come into existence as long as it does not harm anyone else.

Solitary or Coven
Choosing to work solitary or in a coven depends on if you trust the members. Remember that when you work together you will be responsible for everyone else’s thoughts and actions. I personally have chosen to work alone or with one close friend from time to time. I decided that I do not want to be held accountable to other’s actions and I do not want to have to rely on others.
Don’t get me wrong, there are good reasons to join a coven such as structure, more strength, more insight, and sharing ideas and company. It is strictly a personal decision.

Beginning to cast spells
Creating your own sacred place
My favorite place is a place in the woods and surrounded by tall pine trees. I sit on a cold boulder and ground myself. Being grounded is important. To "ground" visualize all of the stress flowing out of your body and feel strength coming up to your from the Earth so that you begin to feel a connection with the Earth. I am completely focused on the sounds of the woods. I can hear the water trickling in the nearby distance. It is the most peaceful place I have ever been. I go there often in my mind when I am in the city. I close my eyes and let my spirit drift there. it is the easiest place to connect with my spirit guide and my inner self.
First, take a cleansing bath or be sure to at least wash your hands with sea salt. Your make up and attire is a personal choice. I prefer to be as clean and pure as possible. Be sure to cleanse your tools before using them. You can clean your ritual knife also known as an athame by dipping it in pure water (I make my water pure by leaving it out under the moonlight).
You need to create a sacred space for yourself before you can do any magickal work. To do this witches cast a circle between the worlds. Circle casting is an absolute necessity because you do not want any unwanted negative energies or entities to drop in on your ritual. This can be done physically or you can do it by visualizing it.
Using a wand made of white sage is a great way to cleanse your area of negativity. Light it and smudge the area with sage to rid the area being sure to leave a couple windows open so that the negativity can leave your house. These can be purchased at most stores that sell Wiccan goods.
Be sure to have all the necessary items together and place them on your alter. If you are performing your ritual outside, you can use a boulder or a log for your alter. When I am outdoors, I like to make a circle out of rocks that is about six foot to work in. Inside you can use string, rope, or a visualized circle. Now its time to cast you circle. Visualize your athame shooting the blue fire as you turn in a clockwise rotation. This way you are not having to leave your circle during magick. Start facing north, rotate clockwise ending back at the magnetic north.
Items for your alter can include candles, incense, athame, pentacle, bowl of pure water, bowl of sea salt, mortar and pestle, (or a large bowl), herbs, oils, crystals, candle holders, candle snuffer, incense holders, and any other special items. Be sure to take precautions so that you will not be disturbed by the phone ringing or people visiting you during the time that you are doing your work.
Place the elemental candle in each of the four corners. East is gold, South is red, West is blue, and north is green. Place a white candle some place on the alter.
The position of the alter really doesn’t matter because are working in a different realm, however, I think many witches prefer the magnetic north. Some witches do prefer to set their alters facing in the north, east, south, or even in the west.
Set up your alter with the items you will need before you cast your circle.
Visualize the tip of your wand or your finger creating a beam of blue flames, like a laser. Visualize the tip of your wand creating a circle around your alter or the area you intend to do your magick in. Visualize the circumference drawn by the wand’s tip as being cast in a blue flaming circle. Project the blue flaming light out of the wand to create the circle. Visualize a circle of burning blue fire that is about one foot high off of the ground.
say out loud,
“I cast this circle to protect myself from all negative energies that may cause harm.
I cast this circle to make this area sacred,
This sacred circle I cast tonight,
This sacred circle to perform this rite,
So mote it be.”
Stand before your alter and light the candles. This is when you can light your incense as well. You are now ready to create a magickal spell.
There are books that can give intricate details on casting circles, it can be a complicated procedure or it can be a simple process. I like to keep it simple. I use a basic cast to make the area sacred. Once it is done, you do not have to do it over each time you work in your alter area. You can also cast a circle in a hurry at any place any time by using your finger and visualizing the circle being cast. This is done usually to protect yourself or to do a spell public places. The basic idea is that you are creating a sacred circle to do your spell work in. You can use a broom instead of a wand if you like. Once you are finished doing your magick you simply close your circle.
Closing the circle
After the ritual, the circle may be taken up by visualizing the circle or the perimeter of the circle coming up counterclockwise (widdershins), starting in the north, while chanting:
The earth, the water, the fire, the air
Return, return, return, return.
You can make up your own words to use, I usually say something to the effect,
“In no way will this spell reverse or place upon me any curse.
I now proclaim this spell is done.
Casting circles is one of the most complicated aspects of spell working. Many people want to know where do the blue flames go when the spell is done? My answer is that you send it back into the earth. Visualize the flames or energy going back into the ground and dissolving. Which brings me to the next most common question, Do I have to recast a circle every time I do a spell. The answer I would be is yes. This is because spell work for me is done primarily for very important issues in my life. For this reason, I would like to know that I am protecting negative forces from entering my spell. Having unwanted negative energy in one’s life can be burdensome. However, I have done some spells in the traffic and in the woods where I did not have all of my tools. So, the answer is no, but it is a good idea to do so.
The circle is open but never broken.”
The idea is that you are closing your circle mentally and verbally. Visualize the blue energy swirling back into flames, and being drawn up into your athame, wand or forefinger. Ground the energy back into the earth.

Start Spell Casting

Making your own spellsIt is fine to use other people’s spells. However, making your own is more powerful because it came from you and is hand tailored by you to meet your needs. A homemade spell should work best for you, if you are a beginner, I recommend using other witches spells until you are feeling confident and comfortable with casting spells. It is better to use a known working recipe than to flounder around trying to make one of your own that in the end will leave you feeling inadequate. The more you practice different individual’s spells, the easier it will become to develop your own style.
House Protection Spell Bottle
Since the earliest spell bottles were created for protection, it seems fitting to begin with one made for this purpose. Ideally, such a bottle will be walled up in a new home under construction, or placed under the floorboards. If this is impossible, simply place it in a position of importance somewhere in the home.
Items needed:
· 1 glass jar with cork stopper or lid or mason jar.
· 1/2 to 1 cup salt (depending on size of the jar)
· 3 cloves garlic
· 9 bay leaves
· 7 TBS dried basil
· 4 TBS dill seeds
· 1 TBS sage and rosemary
· 1 TBS anise
· 1 TBS black pepper or red pepper
· 1 TBS fennel
In the morning, ideally on a bright and sunny day, assemble all items. Place the salt into the bowl and say: Salt that protects, protect my home and all within it. Add the cloves of garlic to the bowl and say: Garlic that protects, protect my home and all within it. Crumble the bay leaves, place in the bowl and say: Bay that protects, protect my home and all within it. Add the basil and say: Basil that protects, protect my home and all within it. Add dill and say: Dill that protects, protect my home and all within it. Add the sage and rosemary and say: Sage that protects, protect my home and all within it. Add the anise and say: Anise that protects, protect my home and all within it. Add the pepper and say: Pepper that protects, protect my home and all within it. Add the fennel and say: Fennel that protects, protect my home and all within it.
Mix together the herbs and the salt with your hands. Through the movement of your hands and fingers, lend energy to the potent protective items. Visualize your home as a shining, safe, guarded, secure place of sanctuary. Pour the mixture into the jar. Seal tightly and place in your home with the following words: Salt and herbs, nine times nine Guard now this home of mine. It is done.
